Air Date: Saturday, October 24, 1992 Andy Carr (Graham Selkirk), his Mom (Kathryn Graves), and younger sister, Christina (Jennie Lévesque, who also played "The Lonely Ghost"), inherit a house from a crazy uncle. However, Andy has a rough go of things as he's immediately picked on by a neighbourhood bully named Koda (Leif Anderson). If that's not bad enough, he's also constantly tormented by his bratty sister. He eventually finds a pantry full of horrors that seem to come alive whenever the basement radio is turned on.
This is among the most accidentally hilarious episodes of season 1. Although it's not without its fair share of lousy dialogue from everyone else, Koda is one of the funniest, most over-the-top bullies I can think of. He's just a terrible sociopath who wants nothing more than to beat up Andy, and there's no reason for it other than Andy's uncle being a bit eccentric. Aside from its hilarity, however, it does have a pretty cool ending and ends up being one of the more fun episodes of the season as a whole, even if that is mostly by way of ironic laughter. Air Date: Saturday, October 17, 1992 A kid named Jake (Benjamin Plener) takes part in a presentation of the (fictional?) Irish play, 'Will-o'-the-Wisp,' with his mentor, Erin (John Dunn-Hill). Erin drinks a special tea to help him perform, and Jake ends up seeking out the ingredients for the tea for himself. For this, he visits an herbal gardener named Sean O'Shaney (David Steinberg), who eventually finds out that Jake is, unbeknownst to him, in over his head. Indeed, Erin has more sinister plans in store for Jake. Don't worry, though, it remains child-friendly!
This doesn't entirely fit the category of scary story-telling so much as it comes across as something of a bedtime story, but I enjoy it. I'm not Jake's biggest fan, but seeing David Steinberg in something other than 'Willow' is cool. He's the highlight of the story. Irish stories and folklore are fascinating, and there's a good mixture here. I have to give it further credit for giving the show a bit of a serious twist and touching on actual death, which many watching could relate to. It's a bit of real acting on their part. It's undoubtedly one of the best episodes of the season. Final Rating: Scared |
