So, at this point, audiences seem to be split right down the middle on this one. It really does seem to be a case of either loving it or hating it, without too much of a middle-ground. Well, I guess I'm here to fullfil that middle-ground-need because for as bad as it was, I didn't actually hate it.

A new take on the story sees the Symbiotes crash land to Earth and get collected by this guy named Carlton Drake (Riz Ahmed). He discovers that these blobs of goop seem to want to bond with a living host. Test after test is done in hopes to have these things work as kind of a suit to potentially explore other planets with.

Enter Eddie Brock (Tom Hardy) who gives Drake a hard time with some top secret files, and as a result loses everything, including his job, his home, and his fiance, Anne (Michelle Williams). Drake ends up calling him back to be a test subject, and long story short, eventually Venom takes him over. Oh no no, not the symbiote who bonds with Eddie and together comes up with the name based on being "Spider-Man's poison" or whatever - the thing is just already named Venom for some reason. Since Spidey is out of the picture, adjustments need to be made, but couldn't he have used the same motif with Drake?

Anyway, while various changes throughout this movie are necessary, I have to strongly disagree with other choices this movie makes as well. For example, Venom suggests to Eddie that he's kind of a loser on his planet, and that was just weird to me. It didn't make sense for the character I know. Perhaps the most bizarre thing that happens here is a bit of a spoiler, but dammit, it needs to be said. Venom takes over Anne in order to save him at one point, and then Venom proceeds to transfer to Eddie via make out session. I couldn't tell if that was supposed to be funny or charming. If it WAS supposed to be charming, however, I gotta say, disturbing.

But for all of the criticisms I can dish out based on the changes made here, its REALLY not that bad of a time. It's for all intents and purposes, a "check our brain at the door" kinda movie. It tried with what it had to work with, and to be perfectly fair, it made it it's own thing without the use of Spider-Man. Now, if you're a purest, I'd just avoid this movie at all costs. I'd say you have to be willing to give the ideas here a chance in order to enjoy it. And while it was by no means a very good movie, I gotta say it still provided the fun time I was looking for. ALMOST like watching a movie where it's so bad it's good. If you can just turn your brain off for a while, you can get through it. I'd say it's about 'Daredevil' level bad.

This is a movie that I might recommend to an audience who's a little more unfamiliar to the character, as it's mostly a new take on him. A lot of Venom fans seem to be enjoying it just as well, so it's hard to say who this is mostly for.  You simply have to see for yourself in order to judge. For me, it turned out to be a sort of guilty pleasure, It does make me wonder, however, how this would have done with an R-rating; which is what I think hurt this movie more than anything else.

3/5
